Connected Wood System - Wood Database

Find the best wood for your woodworking projects. Search a database of 80 popular woods using up to 82 different criteria, including woodworking properties, physical properties, common uses, and distribution.

The Wood Database's powerful capabilities let you:
  • Find wood by one or more properties, including phyiscal appearance, physical and strength properties, drying, machining, fastening, and finishing characteristics.

  • Find wood by one or more common uses.

  • View and compare detailed information about multiple woods at one time.

  • View the geographical source and availability of wood.
Using the Wood Database

To use the Wood Database, start with a list of requirements. For example, if you are building a piece of stained furniture with mortised joints, the following would be your list of requirements:
  • A wood that is good for mortising.
  • A wood used in furniture.
  • A wood that is very good for staining.
Step 1. Select Mortising as the wood property.

Step 2. Select Same as or better than as the condition.

Step 3. Select Good as the value.

Repeat these steps to enter your other requirements. Once the requirements are selected, the Connected Wood System returns the recommended woods for your project. In our example the result is cherry and soft elm.

The growth location is shown for each of the eighty woods defined in the Connected Wood System.
